How to Measure Your Wrist for a Watch (Accurate Method)
The #1 reason watch gifts get returned: it doesn't fit right. A watch that's too big overwhelms the wrist. Too small looks toy-like. And a bracelet that's too loose or tight ruins the whole experience.
Good news: measuring correctly takes 30 seconds with tools you have at home. Here's how we do it at Tulsa Timepiece Company for every customer.
What You Need
- A flexible cloth tape measure (like one used for sewing), OR
- A strip of paper + a ruler
That's it.
Step 1: Measure Wrist Circumference
- Wrap the tape measure or paper strip around your wrist just below the wrist bone (where you'd normally wear a watch)
- Make sure it's snug but not tight — you want the natural wrist size, not a compressed measurement
- If using paper, mark where it overlaps with a pen
- Measure the length with a ruler in inches or centimeters
Typical ranges:
- Women: 5.5–7 inches (14–18 cm)
- Men: 6.5–8.5 inches (16.5–21.5 cm)
- Large men: 8.5–10 inches (21.5–25 cm)
Step 2: Determine Your Case Size
The case diameter (measured in mm) should relate to your wrist width. Generally:
| Wrist Size | Ideal Case Size | Max Case Size |
|---|---|---|
| 5.5–6 inches | 28–34mm | 38mm |
| 6–6.5 inches | 34–38mm | 42mm |
| 6.5–7 inches | 38–42mm | 44mm |
| 7–7.5 inches | 40–44mm | 46mm |
| 7.5–8 inches | 42–46mm | 48mm |
| 8+ inches | 44–48mm | 52mm |
These are guidelines, not rules. Personal preference matters. Some people love oversized watches; others prefer vintage-proportion pieces.
The Lug-to-Lug Rule
Case diameter alone isn't the whole story. The "lug-to-lug" measurement (from the top of the top lug to the bottom of the bottom lug) is actually more important for fit. The lugs shouldn't extend past the edge of your wrist.
Most Invicta Pro Divers have a lug-to-lug around 50–55mm. If your wrist is narrower than that, the watch will look awkward.
Step 3: Bracelet Fit
Once you know your wrist size, you want the bracelet to fit correctly. Add 1 link of slack to your wrist measurement:
- Wrist 7 inches: Bracelet sized to 7.25 inches
- Wrist 6.5 inches: Bracelet sized to 6.75 inches
The watch should slide over your hand but not spin freely on your wrist. You should be able to fit one finger comfortably between bracelet and wrist.
Common Mistakes
1. Measuring too loose
If your tape measure has slack, you'll buy a watch that slides around. Measure snug, then add one link length for comfort.
2. Buying based on case size alone
A 42mm case with wide lugs (52mm L2L) fits bigger than a 44mm case with tight lugs (48mm L2L). Check both numbers.
3. Ignoring wrist shape
Flat wrists accommodate bigger watches than round wrists. If your wrist is round, go smaller than the table suggests.
4. Buying oversized "because it's trendy"
Trendy sizing changes every decade. A well-proportioned watch (case diameter = ~half your wrist width) always looks good.
How We Size At Tulsa Timepiece
Every watch shipped from our Tulsa workshop is sized to your wrist before it leaves:
- Leave your wrist measurement in the order notes at checkout, OR
- Email TulsaTimepieces@gmail.com after ordering
- Our specialist removes or adds the right number of links
- Your watch arrives ready to wear — no jeweler visit needed
If it's wrong, return it within 30 days for free resizing or full refund.
What If I'm Between Sizes?
When in doubt, size up. A bracelet that's slightly loose can have a link removed at any local jeweler. A bracelet that's too tight needs new links added — which requires buying additional genuine Invicta links (we stock them in Tulsa).
